What’s the best way to hide depression from my family?
It’s great that you are reaching out for help. Be assured that you are a very valuable person who deserves to get support especially from your family. We all need support when we are struggling.
It’s so important that reach out for support from a trusted adult such as a parent, school counselor, teacher, coach, or minister. We would suggest getting evaluated by a medical doctor or mental health professional, and getting involved in counseling. It may help you to talk to a counselor at hotline. Know that there is help out there for you and you are not alone.
I used to think the same as you. That i would never get better and everyone who talked to me was just wasting their time. It gets better, but the first step is always sitting down and talking about it with your loved ones. You can start by saying “mom, dad, I’ve been feeling really down lately, and i think i need help. I have felt depressed for so long (x amount of time) and I really want things to get better.
I know its hard but this really is the only way things will get better. I have suffered for 5 years and never really reached out until a year ago. My parents got me into some therapy and now while I still have my days I am doing a lot better.
I’d also like to add that any attempts you make to cover it up may look suspicious. A fake smile does not look the same as a genuine one.
Good luck and stay strong!
